Böyük Britaniyanın Azərbaycandakı səfiri cənab İrfan Sıddıq 20 Yanvar il dönümü münasibətilə bütün Azərbaycan xalqına dərin hüznlə başsağlığı verir.

British Ambassador to Azerbaijan conveys his condolences to the people of Azerbaijan on anniversary of Black January.

Each year the people of Azerbaijan commemorate Black January and pay tribute to the memory of victims of this tragedy, who were mainly civilians. At least 133 people died in violent confrontation that night and over 700 were injured in subsequent clashes. Those who suffered were from different backgrounds, ages, gender and ethnicity. Those killed became martyrs who helped spark the movement for restoration of Azerbaijan`s independence.
I wish to convey my personal sympathies to the people of Azerbaijan on this tragic day. As I join Azerbaijan`s leaders at the commemoration ceremonies on 20 January, my thoughts and prayers will be with the families of the victims who lost their lives.

Today we are celebrating St George's Day. This year it holds extra significance for many as 2016 marks the 50th anniversary of England's first - and so far only - football World Cup win. Victory in the final owed much to Tofig Bakhramov, the Azerbaijani linesman who ruled that Geoff Hurst's shot had crossed the line for England's crucial third goal. There has been much debate over that decision ever since, but Bakhramov always strongly believed that it was the right one. 50 years have now passed, and the latest technology appears to have proven that Bakhramov was right and it was indeed a goal.

Today, James Holder, the employee of our Embassy in Baku celebrated #StGeorgesDay with Tofig Bakhramov's son, grandson and great-grandson. For James, being able to meet and speak with Tofig's family in Azerbaijani was a dream come true.

We wish everyone a happy #StGeorgesDay, and cross our fingers that 2016 will finally bring another international tournament victory for one of the home nations.
